Hi! I’m Hannah Currie and I write Young Adult Contemporary Christian Romance books (aka YA Princess books, which is way easier to say!). I’m also a very proud Australian. Hello from DownUnder! My debut novel, Heart of a Royal, just released last month, so yes, I’m still in that giddy, bouncing off walls state of excitement 🙂 You can learn more about me here on my site and on Facebook, Instagram, and Goodreads.  But, back to Heart of a Royal

Brought to the palace as a newborn, the royal life bestowed upon Mackenna Sparrow was never meant to last forever. With Princess Alina engaged to be married, Mackenna’s presence as companion is no longer required and, like it or not, she must return to the birthright which should have been hers – that of a commoner. But not everyone at the palace wants her gone. When the truths she’s based her life on start crumbling as fast as her future, will she find the courage to trust, both herself and the prince she’s fallen in love with?

Interested? You can read the first two chapters here 🙂

Growing up in a palace, Mackenna learnt lots of things, like how to diffuse a difficult question (smile, nod, and subtly change the topic to a safer one) and how to keep a highly-strung princess calm (liberal use of compliments). Unfortunately, baking lessons weren’t included. Her first, and only, meal she tries to cook ends in complete disaster. That said, I think she would have liked this recipe. It has chocolate, is super easy and tastes great. Let me share with you an Aussie classic and one of my all-time favorite recipes!

A VERY ROYAL RECIPE (aka the good old Aussie favorite and one I cook (and eat) waaaaaaay too often…CHOCOLATE SLICE!)

Ingredients:

Base

  • 2/3 cup/5.3oz butter (melted)
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ cup all purpose flour
  • ½ cup self-rising flour
  • ¼ cup cocoa powder
  • ½ cup desiccated/dried coconut

Icing

  • 1 ½ cups powdered/confectioner’s sugar
  • ¼ cup cocoa powder
  • 2 tbsp boiling water
  • ¼ cup desiccated/dried coconut (for sprinkling)

Method:

Preheat oven to 350F.
Line an 8 x 12 inch baking tray with greaseproof paper (extending up the sides)
Mix base ingredients together.
Spread into prepared tray, flattening down with your hand.
Bake 25 minutes, or until cooked (Note: it will still be somewhat soft when first taken out of the oven and harden as it cools, much like cookies do)
Make icing by mixing confectioner’s sugar, cocoa powder and boiling water together. Stir until smooth.
Pour over hot slice and sprinkle with coconut.
Allow to cool completely before slicing and eating.

Hope you like this Aussie recipe! If you bake it, let me know how it goes. I’d love to see your photos!

Yum……!!!

Yes, I totally made these just for the photo. Yes, that’s my excuse. Yes, they’re already almost all gone. What can I say? I really like this slice 🙂 And my family helped!

    1. Thanks Suzannah! I totally agree with you regarding the cover. Roseanna White did it and did an amazing job! I didn’t do a lot of research as such for the story, more world building since it’s set in a fictional place. But I did base parts of it off places in Europe and my knowledge of various royals.
