Discussion Questions: Bring Her Home

  1. What is your favorite scene from the book and why?
  2. Which character did you most relate to or connect with? Why?
  3. Eva believes she’s made too many mistakes to come home or be worthy of love. Do you think anyone is ever too far gone to be forgiven?
  4. Bring Her Home is inspired by Jesus’ parable of The Prodigal Son (read it in Luke 15:11-32). Which person do you most identify with in the Prodigal Son parable? Why?
  5. One of the major themes in Bring Her Home is grace – the idea of being given what we don’t deserve (or not given what we do deserve). What does grace mean to you? How have you seen God’s grace in your own life?
  6. Evangeline chooses to see butterflies as a symbol of hope. New life from darkness. Where do you find hope in hard times? Is there a particular verse, symbol, place, song, or person who helps you persevere?
  7. “Every piece of the glass that makes up those windows is broken. Some are crushed. All of them are ruined.”
    “But they’re—”
“Beautiful? Aye, ’tis as you say. But only because the creator took those broken pieces and made them into something beautiful. That’s what the creator does.”

Darrek reminds Evangeline that her brokenness and imperfections don’t stop her from being beautiful or valued by God and those around her. Do you struggle with a need to come across to others as perfect? Why might that be? What things have you seen in life that are all the more beautiful because of their imperfections?
  8. King Lior fought Lord Cavendish for Evangeline’s freedom but left the choice to come home to her. Do you think he should have just taken her with him when he left Cavendish Castle? Why do you think he gave her the choice?
  9. “One day, little caterpillar, you’re going to realize that your mistakes don’t define you, nor do they define your future. Only the Almighty can do that. When he looks at you, he doesn’t see your mistakes or the shame you hold so tight to. He simply sees his child. If only you could let the shame stop blinding you and see it too. He loves you, Evangeline, and I do too. But none of that matters if you can’t see the treasure in yourself.”

It’s often easier to focus on our weaknesses and mistakes than our worth. Why do you think that is? Is there something—a mistake or regret or mindset—you need to surrender today in order to move forward in the future God has planned for you?
  10. Darrek calls Eva ‘Caterpillar’. Have you ever had a nickname? How did it come about?
